Community
People who need people are the luckiest people in the world

Dear Friends,
Last month, I flew up north to celebrate my dear friend Tonia’s 50th birthday. With our country in free fall, I wondered if going on a trip was excessive, yet I also felt like it was important to acknowledge this milestone with my friend.
At many points over the weekend, Tonia and I were asked: “How did you two meet?” We couldn’t remember the specifics, just that it was through the church where we volunteered sometime after high school. I remember laughing at all the same things one volunteer meeting, then continuing our conversation over coffee. We’ve been friends since.
Tonia and I ended her birthday weekend with another coffee date. There was laughter and understanding once again, and it felt like a full circle moment.
The weekend reminded me of the importance of community. Of people who knew you when, to see how far you’ve come and watch you take steps forward. Of like minds and hearts who are willing to fight alongside you for what is right. Of friends who aren’t afraid to laugh with you at the absurdity of life and hold your hand as you embrace the unknown.
I’m grateful for my community, in my home, around town, and here in this space that you and I share. I don’t know what I’d do without you. I’m glad I don’t have to find out.
xo Christine

The next time you ask someone how they’re doing, really listen. I’m practicing this myself.
